The War Of The Civil War - 1522 Words
Costs The war produced about 1,030,000 casualties, including about 620,000 soldier deathsââ¬âtwo-thirds by disease, and 50,000 civilians. The war accounted for roughly as many American deaths as all American deaths in other U.S. wars combined. Based on 1860 census figures, 8% of all white males aged 13 to 43 died in the war, including 6% in the North and 18% in the South. Union army dead, amounting to 15% of the over two million who served, was broken down as follows: Notably, their mortality rate was significantly higher than white soldiers: Incomplete Confederate records list 74,524 killed and died of wounds and 59,292 died of disease. Including Confederate estimates of battle losses where no records exist would bring the Confederate death toll to 94,000 killed and died of wounds. The wealth amassed in slaves and slavery for the Confederacy s 3.5 million blacks effectively ended when Union armies arrived; they were nearly all freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. Slaves in the border states and those located in some former Confederate territory occupied before the Emancipation Proclamation were freed by state action or by the Thirteenth Amendment. The war destroyed much of the wealth that had existed in the South. All accumulated investment Confederate bonds was forfeit; most banks and railroads were bankrupt. This, as Robbins (2014) argues, is because civil wars can be said to be better and more reliable predictors of AQ affiliated groups than mere affiliation. This further means that the civil wars in Syria and Iraq could be better used to determine which groups taking part are AQ-affiliated than the mere fact that the groups have been known to be affiliated. Hamlet Appearance vs Reality Free Essays
When Hamletââ¬â¢s mother chastises him for his overly intense grief, she asks him why, if death is universal, ââ¬Å"Why seems it then so particular with theeâ⬠? (1. 2. 78) He responds, ââ¬Å" ââ¬ËSeems,â⬠madam? Nay, it is. We will write a custom essay sample on Hamlet Appearance vs Reality or any similar topic only for you Order Now I know not ââ¬Ëseemsââ¬â¢ â⬠(1. 2. 79). With those words, Hamlet delineates between appearance and reality, a theme that continues throughout the play Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare. The idea of appearance versus reality defines three characters in particular: Hamlet, Polonius, and Kind Claudius. The paradox of discrepancy between appearance versus reality is that sometimes, to find reality or truth, one has to act fake himself in order to find out the true nature of others. The two characters who use this theme for unjust purposes ultimately fail, but Hamlet is appearing as something he is not only to discover the truth. Even though Hamletââ¬â¢s tragic death ends the play, he ultimately finds the truth and accomplishes his ultimate purpose, while Polonius and King Claudius could have easily avoided their deaths by remaining loyal and truthful to their loved ones and to themselves. CHANGE AROUND THIS LAST SENTENCE, I THINK ITS CONFUSING) King Claudius is perhaps the one who puts on the biggest act out of all the se characters. Claudiusââ¬â¢s personality is completely false, especially when it comes to his pretended love for Hamlet and the supposed grief he has for his dead brother. When the audience first sees Claudius,it seems that he is sincere in his grief for his brother. He describes to the court his mixed emotions concerning his brotherââ¬â¢s death and his hasty marriage: Though yet of Hamlet our dear brotherââ¬â¢s death The memory be green, and that it us befittedTo bear our hearts in grief, and our whole kingdom To be contracted in one brow of woe, Yet so far hath discretion fought with nature That we with wisest sorrow think on him Together with remembrance of ourselves (1. 2. 1-7). Claudius is careful to appear to be grieving and anxious to show that his recent marriage does not mean disrespect to his brother. In the same scene he also presents himself as a good king, sending ambassadors to deal with the problem of Fortinbras and granting permission to Laertes to return to France, and he demonstrates the ability to handle issues at court. However, when the Ghost reveals to Hamlet that he was murdered by Claudius, the audience realizes that the r eality of Claudiusââ¬â¢ inner character is very different from the appearance he presents. Claudiusââ¬â¢s motive for creating a false appearance is to cover up the reality of his crime. Claudius hides his crime even from his wife, Gertrude. She clearly hasnââ¬â¢t been an accomplice because the Ghost specifically instructs Hamlet, ââ¬Å"Taint not thy mind, nor let thy soul contrive/Against thy Mother aughtâ⬠(1. 5. 92-93). Even his wife, Gertrude, doesnââ¬â¢t know who Claudius really is.If the audience has any question about old Hamlet being murdered by his brother, that doubt is removed when Claudiusââ¬â¢s false appearance is stripped away as he unsuccessfully attempts to pray: But, O, what form of prayer Can serve my turn? ââ¬ËForgive me my foul murderââ¬â¢? That cannot be, since I am still possessed Of those effects for which I did the murder: My crown, mine own ambition, and my queen. (3. 3. 55-59) Once alone, Claudius reveals the truth. When Claudius realizes that Hamlet is onto him, he goes to great lengths to try to get rid of Hamlet so that he can maintain his false appearance of innocence. When the plot to send Hamlet to his death in England fails, Claudius, like Polonius and Hamlet, sets up a false scene in an attempt to have Hamlet killed. The sword fight at the end of the play is meant to appear as a friendly sport, but in reality, it is all just Claudiusââ¬â¢s plan for murder by poisoned wine or poisoned sword tips. Claudiusââ¬â¢s actions are arguably the most corrupt of all, although at times, Poloniusââ¬â¢s deeds throughout the play are almost as unjust as Claudiusââ¬â¢s (CHANGE SENTENCE AROUND? ) Even though Poloniusââ¬â¢s reasons for his false appearance arenââ¬â¢t to cover up a murder, his motives are still less than admirable. Polonius sets up his multiple fake appearances by creating scenes to be enacted, just as the director in a play would. For example, Polonius first portrays himself as a wise father saying goodbye to his son, but once Laertes has arrived in France, Polonius sends a spy, Reynaldo, after him, proving he is not the trusting, all-knowing father he claims to be. In Poloniusââ¬â¢s elaborate instructions for Reynaldo, he orders Reynaldo to come close to slandering Laertes so he can find out the truth of Laertesââ¬â¢s behavior: ââ¬Å"Your bait of falsehood take this carp of truthâ⬠(2. 1. 70).In a slightly different way, Polonius sets up another spy scene, this time, to get information about Hamlet. He betrays his daughter by using her as bait to gain information about Hamlet, just as he betrayed Laertes by having him spied upon. Although Polonius does find out that Hamletââ¬â¢s appearance of insanity is not out of love for Ophelia, he causes his daughter great anguish in the process. Poloniusââ¬â¢s final subterfuge occurs when he insists on his secret presence at the confrontation between Hamlet and Gertrude. Ultimately, Poloniusââ¬â¢s deceitfulness brings him to his death.Although Hamlet is like Polonius in the sense that he uses false appearances in order to ascertain the truth, his motifs in doing so are much more morally sound. Hamlet adopts what he calls an ââ¬Å"antic disposition,â⬠so that he only appears to be insane. He creates this false appearance so that he has the freedom to gather information from people without being suspected of anything unusual, therefore using false appearance to find the reality of the truth. Hamletââ¬â¢s first act of craziness occurs when he is talking to Ophelia ââ¬Å"ungartered and down-gyved to his ankleâ⬠(2. 1. 90). nd she reports his strange condition to her father. Hamlet persists in this false behavior throughout most of the play. Besides trying to find the truth, Hamlet uses his supposed condition to make fun of Polonius and belittle him slanders, sir; for the satirical rogue says here that old men have gray beards, that their faces are wrinkled, their eyes purging think amber and plum-tree gum, and thst they have a plentiful laxk of wit, together with most weak hams; all which, sir, though I most powerfully and potently believe, yet I hold it not honesty to have it thus set downâ⬠(2. 2. 215-220). SOME SORT OF EXPLANATION OF IMPORTANCE OR SOME SENTENCE EXPLAINING THIS? ) Hamlet sets up a clever scene to rid himself of other enemies: he turns the tables on Rosencrantz and Guilderstern, who are supposed to be Hamletââ¬â¢s childhood friends, by reversing the Claudiusââ¬â¢s orders for Hamletââ¬â¢s death so that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are killed. But Hamletââ¬â¢s greatest achievement through the creation of a false appearance is his production of ââ¬Å"The Mousetrap,â⬠the play within a play. By using drama, Hamlet creates a fictional deviceââ¬âan illusionââ¬âto find the reality of the truth, by observing Claudiusââ¬â¢s reaction to the play.Hamlet is certain he has exposed Claudiusââ¬â¢s guilt when he stops the play and cries out, ââ¬Å"Give me some light. Away! â⬠(3. 2. 295). This scene is very important in the development of Hamletââ¬â¢s revenge because it ultimately gives him the confidence he needs to execute the murder. All three characters create false appearances, but all for different reasons. Claudius creates a false appearance to mask his crime while both Polonius and Hamlet use appearances to deviously find information. However, Polonius exhibits no concern for morality in his actions, which is where he differs from Hamlet.Hamlet is driven to create a false appearance because of his loyalty towards his father. Even though the idea of revenge itself may be questionable, his love for his father and his desire to right the wrong that has been done to him are more honorable than the motives of the other characters. Quotes for Claudius Acts like he is sad about his brother dying ââ¬Å"whose whisper oââ¬â¢er the worldââ¬â¢s diameter, as levels as the cannon to his blank transports his poisoned shot, may miss our name and hit the woundless a ir. oh come away! Conduct a literature review of studies to analyse the basis of human Assignment
Conduct a literature review of studies to analyse the basis of human sexual orientation - Assignment Example ave given sufficient explanations to the prevailing male and female characteristics, people still need to be made aware of their particular sexual orientation and how this information can enhance their functioning in life (Weiss, 2007; Weiner, 2004). Sexual orientation can be defined as the lasting personality that enables people to incline to their feelings of romance or sexual appeal to other people of the matching sex, gender, or both (Scherer, 2013; Hopkin, 2004). The romantic or sexual feelings that are subsumed by these people can be classified as being heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual (Biegel, 2010). However, it is important to understand that there are people who do not experience sexual feelings or attractions to people of the opposite sex, these people are said to be asexual. The above-listed categories, including asexual orientation, are part of the wider concept relating to sexual identity in human beings. In reference to APA, sexual orientation can be described as an individualââ¬â¢s judgment of his identity, which is determined by the attractions, other related behaviors as well as being a member in a group of people that share similar attractions. This is a different term that is said to overlap largely with the concept of sexual orientation. An individual that is said to identify himself as being bisexual distinguishes himself from another person simply by the fact that he had made a choice. For instance, a person that is bisexual may have preference for certain sex in place of another and go ahead to fulfill his ââ¬Å"desire,â⬠in this case, the main determining factor in sexual preference is the element of choice. Scientists, in their numerous researches, have failed to give any conclusive evidence about why and how one exhibits certain sexual orientations compared to another. However, several theories that have been grounded on biological research reports explain that sexual orientation is largely influenced by genetic factors. At the

Iron Triangle Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Iron Triangle - Essay Example roup always has the potential of creating a situation in which through lobbying, they go an extra mile in having undue influence on the government of the day. For instance, The National Rifle Association can strategically lobby in order to block proposed gun control measures. The iron triangle concept can come into play in such a scenario the politicians in any of the two congresses bow to the lobbyists then in turn block initiatives like the universal background checks. This would happen even if majority of the voters support the proposed gun control measures. The congress forms another corner of the Iron Triangle. In many instances, the congress with the long term scheme of winning elections exchanges what can be called friendly legislations to government agencies and bureaucrats. This can always happen in two ways. Firstly, the bureaucrats receive less oversight from the congress which enables them to execute policy more freely.Secondly, agencies, special interest groups and bureaucrats receive lowered regulation and special favours. As an example, a congress person in the Agricultural Committee representing Midwest in the House representatives may lobby from the ethanol industry to support factual evidence on why its beneficial to use corn in producing ethanol. If the ethanol industry sees the congressmanââ¬â¢s policies to be beneficial, then they play a great part in lobbying selling the representative as a bet for corn farmers. This would in turn raise chances for reelection. Government Agencies and bureaucracies form the third corner of the triangle. They have the main responsibility to implement the procedures and policies passed by the congress. Since congress is their key source of funding, they in some instances implement decisions which are in favor of the congress even if those decisions are unpopular with the citizens. For instance, Amtrack can apply dubious tactic of convincing the congress to reduce truck regulations although this has a long time

Satire In The Musical Urinetown The musical Urinetown, by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis, falls in the class of the modern anti-musical with its untraditional structure and content, not only breaking the mold of what makes musical theatre, but making satire of itself and its relatives in the process. This essay will investigate how Urinetown uses satire to create a new, participatory role for audience unimplemented by its predecessors. This is relevant theatrical topic as it suggests a contrast from musical theatres historical structure, as well as changing social roles in the theatrical culture. To approach this proposition, I will investigate by researching the creation of Urinetown, as well as traditional musicals to serve as a comparative structure. I will use this research to draw conclusions about Urinetowns satirical nature and the role it creates for the audience. Introduction My interest for Urinetown came with the announcement of a local high schools theatrical season, which included the musical. Having heard the name but being unfamiliar with the show, I began to research the plot and was enthralled by the story. As wacky as it is, Urinetown has contemplative themes with social commentary. The musical tells the story of citizens in a town where all restrooms are government operated. As crude as it is, much of the focus of the musical is on having to pay to pee. While Hollmann and Kotis take a humorous approach, the show does embody the peoples oppression by their own government, a theme all too familiar in a historical and current context. Urinetown creates a culture of desperation, the frequent consequence of unequal wealth distribution. Corrupt members of the Urine Good Company, or UGC, live in lavishness while average citizens cannot even afford to fulfill their most basic needs. Essential to the plot are the characters which embody theatrical archet ypes. These archetypes will be included in my scope of investigation along with Hollmann and Kotis creation of the musical. My interest in audience role came with my attendance of the North Carolina Governors School in the area of theatre. During our five weeks, we created a show which challenged traditional audience roles. The expectation of a theatre patron is to sit and be entertained, perhaps laugh and cry, and then go home. This actor-audience relationship has been upheld majorly through Vaudeville, opera, dramas, comedies, and most theatre imaginable. My investigation intends to prove that Urinetown does not adhere to these traditional audience roles, and instead uses satire to challenge its viewers, making them uncomfortable and offering a more participatory, engaging theatre experience. My methodology for this essay will primarily be analysis of research regarding record of Urinetown and its formation, and traditional musical theatre structure and the satirical comparison of it. Investigation Urinetown was inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, specifically Threepenny Opera. Threepenny Opera, which transformed old-fashioned opera and operetta forms, incorporated a sharp political perspective, and the sound of 1920s Berlin dance bands and cabaret, is most strikingly similar to Urinetown. From the shows opening number, the audience is introduced to an oppressed society run by a corrupt government, shown through operatic chorus chords and lyrics. The show mimics others through its number, Too Much Exposition , poking fun at the notion of an excess of background knowledge to ruin a show, taking stabs at Threepenny Opera and other musicals such as Les Miserables. Dark and dramatic with crude humor laced on top, Threepenny Opera certainly bears a resemblance to Urinetown. Urinetown is a prime example of ironic detachment, but it wasnt the first musical to use this perspective. Though this approach has not been standard practice for most of the history of musical theatre, it has appeared in Of Thee I Sing (1931), The Cradle Will Rock (1937), Guys and Dolls (1950), The Threepenny Opera (1954),How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1961), Hair (1968), Company (1970), Grease (1972), Chicago(1975), 42nd Street (1980), Assassins (1990), Bat Boy (1997), and others. These shows broke the traditional role of musical comedy. Urinetown strays from self-importance in favor of self-deprecation. John Bush Jones writes in his book Our Musicals, Ourselves, It seems no accident that a cluster of solemn musicals came right at the end of the century. Among serious and thoughtful creative people, the ends of centuries have often provoked a lot of serious and thoughtful thinking, and the production of works of literature, art, or in our case, musical theatre of especially unsmiling seriousness. Urinetown rebels against this seriousness, even mocking it. This show acknowledges its own art form, but is also part of what it mocks, taking on issues such as corporate corruption, environmentalism, civil liberties, class warfare. Ironic detachment has now become so present in television and modern culture that it no longer packs the same artistic or political punch. As our culture evolves, so must storytelling. Rodgers and Hammerstein were groundbreaking in 1943, but times have changed. Contracting to their elaborate storytelling , new musicals are more honest, breaking the fourth wall, that barrier of lies between actor and audience. Urinetown, first opening in New York in the summer of 1999, referenced dozens of movies and other bits of American pop culture, including The Wizard of Oz. Contrasting though, where Dorothys selflessness and bravery saved the day in Oz, the traits result in hopelessness in Urinetown. Even though both stories take place in an era of depression, they have separate audiences. Referenced in the musical is a response to Thomas Robert Malthus Essay on the Principles of Population (1798), which discusses the tendency of human beings to outstrip their resources. This heavy and dark allusion contrasts to the traditional musical, even in Urinetown with its light potty-humor. Urinetown breaks the mold of the traditional musical and yet, in certain ways, is true to conventional musical theatre, the shows structure taking after a Rodgers and Hammerstein model. The score ranges from direct homages to Threepenny Opera to traditional ballads to hymns, gospel, Bach, and the B-52s. The work, Urinetown, though it seems shallow and crude, is carefully constructed theatre, presented by outrageous circumstances. Urinetown registered with audiences on many levels, like any good fairy tale, providing for each audience member a slightly different message, question, or experience. The show received ten Tony nominations, winning for best score, best book, and best director. Bruce Weber in The New York Times called it a sensational piece of performance art, one that acknowledges theatre tradition and pushes it forward as well. Linda Winer inNewsday called it elevated silliness of the highest order that makes a gratifying case for the restorative return to knowing foolishness and the smartly absurd. Rex Reed in The New York Observer wrote, What kind of musical is this? A fresh, unique, original, impudent, colorful, exciting, irreverent, surprising and wonderful musical, thats all. Clive Barnes of the New York Post called it a wild and happy mix of biting satire and loving parody. Urinetown is both a satire of American political and social forces, and also a parody of musical theatre as an art form, both aspects equally well crafted. The show ran 965 performances, more than two years, a run that might have lasted far longer if not for September 11 and its crippling of Broadway. Unlike traditional musicals, Urinetowns extreme emotionalism is followed by cynicism. When a metaphor pops up, it is promptly diffused by literalism, such as the gazes to the distance. Even the resolution of the plot contrasts idealism with tragedy and harsh reality. Literalism is present throughout the show, from the conversations between Lockstock and Little Sally about the show itself, to the opening number that tells the audience where the bathroom is and what should be on their tickets. Of the two love songs, one focuses less on emotion and more on the literal body, and the other is relayed through Little Sally, as one of the lovers is already dead. Urinetown is satirical, laughing at the sappy old-fashioned musical comedy, but also laughing at shows like Les Miz or Passion which reject those conventions and perhaps go too far the other way. Urinetown raises questions about what we expect from musicals, whether or not musicals confronting an issue are satisfying entertainment, why certain stories or topics are musicalized, whether or not serious musicals are too serious. Hollmann and Kotis use musical theatre clichà ©s ironically throughout the show, using traditional musical comedy and making it more cruel, dark, and modern. Each time Officer Lockstock and Little Sally talk about what musicals shouldnt do, theyre also talking about devices certain musicals have used traditionally. When Urinetown kills off its hero, the joke is on Carousel. The violent-rage dance number, Snuff That Girl, consciously parodies Cool in West Side Story, right down to the finger snaps. Cladwells self-justification songs comically mirror Javerts Stars in Les Misà ©rables. In the original Broadway production ofUrinetown, one bit of choreography even invoked the now famous Les Miserables March. The scene in which Cladwell bribes Bobby mirrors the same scene in The Cradle Will Rock. And of course, Urinetown both uses and abuses the devices of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill and their Threepenny Opera. The song Mr. Cladwell is a stab at traditional musicals which laud over the lead, like Hello, Dolly, Mame, and others, but instead of celebrating love for the leading lady and her optimistic spunk, here the adoring chorus is celebrating murderous, unchecked capitalism. The Cop Song is both a tribute to Threepenny but also an ironic nod to hip-hop culture. While hip-hop music has historically taken violence against the poor and turned it back on the police, here the violent imagery usually used for anti-police rhetoric is given to the police themselves, with the violence now turned back on the poor again. Other names in the show follow the Dick Tracy, with Robbie the Stockfish, Billy Boy Bill, Soupy Sue, Little Becky Two Shoes, Tiny Tom, and Hot Blades Harry. Sallys description of why Urinetown isnt a good musical is funny precisely because the aspects she thinks are missing are no longer essential aspects to musical theatre. She thinks all musicals are 1920s musical comedies, but one of the central jokes of this show is that almost no musicals are like that anymore. Urinetown takes musical comedies, serious book musicals, political musicals, and concept musicals and takes them at extremes, showing us exactly how far we have strayed from the 1920s. Its very existence mocks anyone in the audience who still holds those mindsets about musicals in this age of Rent, Assassins, Passion, Bat Boy, Reefer Madness, Chicago, Floyd Collins, A New Brain, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Urinetown demonstrates that at conventional musical is no longer the convention. Bobby Strong is the archetypal American musical comedy lead being charming, cocky, and heroic. This traditional character extends back to George M. Cohan in his 1904 musical Little Johnny Jones, Billy in Anything Goes, Joey in Pal Joey, Larry Foreman in The Cradle Will Rock, Billy in Carousel, Woody in Finians Rainbow, Harold Hill in The Music Man, Nathan in Guys and Dolls, and Ponty in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Ms. Pennywise is another archetypal musical theatre character, the immoral but realistic older woman that Bertolt Brecht seems to have invented with Threepenny Opera, and well as in other musicals such as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, Fraulein Schneider in Cabaret, and Joanne in Company. Josephine Strong is the archetypal older wise woman, joining Aunt Eller in Oklahoma!, Nettie in Carousel, Lady Thiang in The King and I, the Mother Abbess inThe Sound of Music. But here, the older woman does not have much to offer in the way of wisdom. Urinetown also takes much inspiration from Marc Blitzsteins 1937 political musical The Cradle Will Rock, which was itself heavily influenced by Brecht and composer Kurt Weill. The Cradle Will Rock label names like Mr. Mister, Editor Daily, Dr. Specialist, Reverend Salvation, Harry Druggist, and Larry Foreman. Greg Kotis did the same thing in Urinetown, with the heroic Bobby Strong, the well dressed Mr. Cladwell, the optimistic and rich Hope Cladwell, the amoral but practical Ms. Pennywise, and the cops Lockstock and Barrel. The cops names are funny in relation the literal meanings of the phrase. But its also why the original staging of The Cop Song was ill-conceived; if Lockstock and Barrel are the only two cops on the force, if they are the whole police force, lock, stock, and barrel. Urinetown is created with the spirit of Bertolt Brecht, particularly his Threepenny Opera and other political theatre. Brecht aimed to engage the audience through their brains instead of their hearts, to get them to think about the issues and questions put before them on stage and constantly reminding them of the over the top nature of storytelling while maintaining levels of wonder and self-criticism. The set projected an environment rather than representing it; the small chorus, songs to the audience, and elegance with which even the most serious scenes are performed commented on the fable nature of the show and the actions shown on stage. Reflecting the mindset of his work, Brecht once wrote, Nothing is more revolting than when an actor pretends not to notice that he has left the level of plain speech and started to sing. Its a bold statement, but not an unfair one. Brecht wanted truthfulness and realism on stage, not the performance. He rejected the ignoring of the Fourth Wall and thought that the Rodgers and Hammerstein naturalistic acting isnt actually the least bit naturalistic since most people in the real world dont break into four-part harmony. To Brecht, the act of singing onstage is more honest, more real, and connects the actor to the audience more fully because hes not trying to fool them. This isnt an approach that works with shows such as Brigadoon, but is almost necessary for Urinetown. Urinetown uses all of these ideas presented by Brecht. Urinetown is satirical in its theme, plot, characters, and music numbers, parodying traditional musicals as well as modern anti-musicals. Urinetown particularly gains influence through the satirical principles of Berlolt Brecht.

Legislative Proposal For New Indecency Language In Telecom Bill :: essays research papers
Legislative Proposal for New Indecency Language in Telecom Bill I. Summary à à à à à Although the October 16, 1995 legislative proposal purports to regulate ââ¬Å" computer pornographyâ⬠, the proposal contains fatal flaws which render the proposal at best counterproductive and at worst devastating to on-line communications. First, it prohibits, but fails to define, ââ¬Å"indecentâ⬠speech to minors -- a dangerously vague, medium-specific, and, after decades of litigation, still undefined concept, which may include mere profanity. This may tie up successful prosecution of the law in courts for years to come, while courts wrestle to divine a constitutional definition of ââ¬Å"indecentâ⬠-- and while companies are left with uncertain liability. à à à à à Second, the October 16 proposal may actually hold systems liable for communications over which they have no specific knowledge or control. The proposal purports to target those who ââ¬Å"knowinglyâ⬠send prohibited communications -- itself a relatively low standard of liability that may not even require actual intent or willfulness. Nevertheless, because the proposal i) defines the elements of criminal liability in vague and contradictory terms, and ii) eliminates safeharbors in the Senate bill that would define a clear standard of care, it might hold systems liable for actions that don't reach even a ââ¬Å" knowinglyâ⬠standard of liability. As a result, access providers, system managers and operators, and employers may potentially be liable for actions of users over which they have no specific knowledge, intent, or control. à à à à à For any company that communicates by computer, the proposal: 1) Creates liability for, but never defines, ââ¬Å"indecentâ⬠speech, a dangerously vague standard that could leave companies criminally liable for use of mere profanity; 2) Establishes vague and contradictory standards of liability that could leave innocent companies vicariously liable for communications over which they have no control; 3) Strips workable affirmative defenses from the Senate bill, eliminating a clear standard of care for companies. à à à à à Not only does the proposal endanger companies, it fails to protect children. The indecency standard guarantees that enforcement will be tied up in the courts for years to come. Companies will be particularly reticent to identify and eradicate prohibited communications when they are incapable of discerning which communications are ââ¬Å"indecentâ⬠and when the company's consequent knowledge of the communications may actually make them liable. At worst, the proposal will either shut down systems entirely or will shut down any attempts to constructively monitor and screen systems, as providers take a know-nothing stance to avoid prosecution for purported knowledge. II. The ââ¬Å"Indecencyâ⬠Standard and Uncertain and Conflicting Standards of Culpability Implicate Innocent Companies But Fail To Protect Children. A. The undefined ââ¬Å"indecencyâ⬠standard is possibly unenforceable and certainly counterproductive. à à à à à Although the October 16 proposal purports to regulate ââ¬Å"computer

Lessons On How To Use Pendulums Environmental Sciences Essay
Throughout history, pendulums have been used for many different things. They have been used as tools for turn uping H2O, gold or other minerals ; they have aided in medical diagnosing or foretelling the gender of an unborn babe ; they have been used in combination with maps in turn uping points or people ; and have been used to reply inquiries or predict the hereafter. Dousing rods predate pendulums in use for some of the above mentioned countries. Dousing rods are normally either L-shaped metal rods or even a Y-shaped subdivision from a tree. Some water witchs prefer one signifier over the other when dousing for H2O, oil, gold or other minerals. However, they can non be used in such a broad spectrum as a pendulum nor are they as easy portable. Let ââ¬Ës go back to late 300 CE merely as an illustration of how far back in history there is recorded grounds of pendulum use as a divination technique. It is here that a adult male by the name of Ammianus Marcellinus was known as a baronial Roman historiographer. Among the tonss of texts he wrote on the current occurrences of his clip, you will happen a really interesting blend of heathen enigmas. He tells of many users of ââ¬Å" the black humanistic disciplines â⬠; of swayers seeking the advocate of diviners who scryed for messages through H2O and fire ; you will besides happen some devising anticipations through astrological agencies. Amongst these recorded historical narratives, you will besides happen Marcellinus state the narrative of a group of plotters. This group non merely plotted the blackwash of a Roman emperor but they besides made usage of a pendulum-like device to happen the name of the following emperor. They did this by suspending a ring on a piece of yar n and utilizing it much like an Ouija board. Interesting, huh? You do n't happen excessively many narratives like that in the wars and events go oning in the universe as we know it now. However, shortly you will detect other interesting events that have happened even in our ain timeline ( or the timeline of our parents ) of pendulum usage. As I mentioned, pendulums are a much more moneymaking tool for the diviner because they can embrace so much more than the capablenesss of a dowse rod. Whether you believe the pendulum is replying a inquiry for you and is playing on your subconscious or if you believe the pendulum is being affected through religious agencies, no one truly knows for certain. All that is known is that it can and does work rather efficaciously. There are many interesting facts and narratives contained in an online book called Pendulums and Dowsing Rods that can be read here: hypertext transfer protocol: //brianstalin-pendulum.blogspot.com/ . Please read through this short but really interesting book! With a spot of diging into history, you will happen the narratives of the Inquisition and the accusals of witchery associated with it. You may besides happen recorded spots of swayers trusting on diviners or visionaries to help them in conflict or in doing determinations of province. You may besides happen the narratives of the alchemists and the hunt for the elusive philosopher ââ¬Ës rock. While you ââ¬Ëre happening all this ââ¬â you will besides happen assorted in between all those celebrated narratives, the narrative of the water witchs or H2O enchantresss. Sometimes you may even read about gypsy trains and the anticipations made with a ring on a twine. Seek and you shall happen sometimes in obvious topographic points and sometimes in the most pathetic of topographic points, spots and pieces of pendulum history. Assignments Post to Discussion Board Please portion with a few sentences what drew you in to taking this category. In the on-line book Pendulums and Dowsing Rods, name one individual stated in history who used a pendulum that you found interesting and what they used it for. What drew you to this individual? Minimum of 150 word essay ( it ââ¬Ës merely a large paragraph ââ¬â do n't acquire scared ) . Post below Write a 300-500 word essay on pendulum usage in history. It can be on the same individual you wrote about for # 1 or a general ââ¬Å" pendulum usage in history â⬠essay. Please mention your beginnings for this assignment. LESSON TWO Terminology There are several different footings used for the different countries a pendulum can be used. A twosome of the footings most frequently used and will be used here are ââ¬Å" pendulum dowse â⬠and ââ¬Å" pendulum divining. â⬠Pendulum dousing refers to when a pendulum is used to seek for a specific mark or thing such as H2O, gold, or other minerals. Pendulum divining is the proper term when utilizing a pendulum to foretell the hereafter or supply information. Pendulums can besides used for dowse and radiesthesia. Both of these footings refer to dousing with a pendulum or divining rod. While they hold that in similarity, what the diviner is dousing for is rather different. Dowse is the proper term for dousing for concealed objects. These concealed objects can be H2O, minerals or other cherished artefacts. It can be lost points or even locating people. The of import thing to retrieve is this: dowse is the term used to happen things. Radiesthesia is besides used to ââ¬Å" happen things â⬠. It ââ¬Ës merely those things it is happening are of a much more delicate nature than that of person utilizing dowse. Radiesthesia can mention to all signifiers of dousing but it normally refers to medical dowse. It gets its name from the theory that all life organisms emit some sort of radiation or other emanation and it is this that can be detected through dowse. In order to utilize a pendulum for medical diagnosing, the diviner holds the pendulum above the patient and easy moves it about above the patient ââ¬Ës organic structure. The theory of how this works is this ââ¬â when the pendulum is above a morbid portion of the organic structure, the pendulum is so repelled from the disease which causes the pendulum to swing or curve to maintain itself off from the illness inside the patient. The larger the cringle the pendulum makes, the more morbid that organ or country of the organic structure. In other words, ra diesthesia is for turn uping medical jobs while dowse is for turn uping objects. What is a pendulum? A pendulum is an object that has many different utilizations as you will larn through these categories. It can be for your ain personal energy work and can be used in enchantment work. It is a tool that can be used efficaciously to link to your subconscious, the spirit universe and for divination. Pendulums come in many different forms and can be made from different stuffs. You can buy a really fancy one or do a really simple one. A pendulum can be an elaborately carven rock or crystal wrapped in a beautiful wire design or merely consists of a stone on the terminal of a yarn. You can besides utilize a watchband with a appeal on the terminal or even a necklace with a pendent. Equally long as it is something that can freely travel, it can be used as a pendulum. I have even heard of person utilizing an ear bud when there was nil else availableâ⬠¦ and it worked! The chief thing a pendulum consists of is a somewhat weighted object normally at the terminal of a short spot of concatenation that is able to travel freely and is able to swivel. The concatenation can be of varied lengths but the length a individual by and large wants in a pendulum is one where the pivot terminal is held with fingertips, your elbow remainders on a tabular array and the leaden terminal does non make the top of the tabular array thereby leting the weight to swing freely and of its ain agreement. As you can see, the varied lengths of pendulums that can be purchased in a store are due to the different lengths of a individual ââ¬Ës forearm ââ¬â though the concatenation is by and large 6.5-7.5 inches long. If you find utilizing the pendulum works better with the concatenation at a shorter length, you can garner some of the concatenation in your fingers and keep the concatenation closer to the pendulum terminal. Another thing, if you are adept at working with jewell ery, you can shorten your concatenation by taking some links from the concatenation. However, I have seen pendulums for dousing much larger and used for standing instead than in a sitting place. There are besides times the concatenation is somewhat shorter every bit good. It is the ability for motion that is most of import. Assignments Below are the footings and definitions you will necessitate to retrieve to finish the assignment for this category. Radiesthesia ââ¬â dowse to name medical issues Rhabdomancy ââ¬â dowse to turn up points Dousing ââ¬â the pattern of turn uping H2O or other concealed points Divining ââ¬â the art of seeking to announce future events or detect hidden cognition Pendulum ââ¬â a leaden object that is suspended from a fixed point yet is able to swing freely ; a tool that can be used to link to the subconscious, the spirit universe and for divination. LESSON THREE Choosing a Pendulum There are several different types of pendulums to take from if you decide to buy one. There is no specific type that is the ââ¬Å" best â⬠to acquire. Travel with what you are drawn to. It may be one made of wood or metal. It may be a pendulum that is a merely cut semi-precious rock. It may be a combination of all of the above or even none of the above. You may even make up one's mind to do one yourself if you are so cunningly inclined. However it happens, you need to acquire to cognize your pendulum merely as you would any other divination object. If you are familiar with the belongingss of rocks and crystals, this can assist you out in taking the right rock for you or for what it is you hope to carry through with your pendulum. If you are non familiar, so get down looking at what pendulum attracts your attending. Make note of what type of rock it is ( if it is made of a rock or crystal ) and look up the belongingss of that peculiar rock. If you happen to be shopping in a metaphysical shop, ask! Opportunities are the individual who works there will either cognize the reply or will cognize where to look it up and can assist steer you to do a terrific purchase! Making your ain pendulum is a really personal experience. It is besides non really hard if you have merely a few little tools and the inspiration. You can utilize either a spot of strong yarn, all right rope or a little concatenation ( this can be from a watchband, necklace or found in the jewelry-making subdivision of your favourite trade shop ) . You will necessitate something with a small spot of weight ââ¬â it does non necessitate to needfully be heavy ââ¬â merely heavier than your concatenation so that it will be able to utilize this weight to travel. Anything that weighs between 0.5-2 ounces is perfect. Traditionally, the pendulum is an object that comes to a point that hangs down. However, I have had merely every bit much fortune with a wire-wrapped semi-precious rock or a unit of ammunition ball form. The form and the stuff does non count every bit much as it being something that entreaties to you. You can utilize a bead at the top of the concatenation or a knot at th e top of the rope as a ââ¬Å" grip â⬠for your pendulum. I have made a pendulum by utilizing a hematite ring, set and distorted my ain concatenation utilizing a thin Cu wire and so wire-wrapped a ruddy tiger ââ¬Ës oculus rock at the terminal. I have besides made some pendulum watchbands which are nil more than a little spot of concatenation, a rock attached with a bond glued to the top and a clasp so you can have on it and ne'er be without your pendulum. I have used my pentagram necklace as a pendulum at times ââ¬â I merely need to keep the concatenation in my custodies so it is non excessively long. An old household tradition of mine is to do a pendulum from a nuptials ring and a spot of yarn to foretell the gender of a babe. That was more of a ââ¬Å" goad of the minute â⬠pendulum and besides a reasonably common common people tradition. As you can see, there are many different ways one can be created. Sometimes the rock that you hold at the tip of the concatenation will be different than the leaden rock of the pendulum itself or merely as likely it will be a little rock to keep that is the same as the pendulum. You may besides come across metal or wood pendulums. Do n't dismiss the effectivity of these! Forests and metals have belongingss merely every bit good as different rocks and crystals. The best stake is to seek before you buy. However, if you are unable to be ââ¬Å" in individual â⬠and alternatively make some online shopping ââ¬â cognition about what you are buying is ever the best stake. Whether you have made, purchased or been gifted a pendulum, delight retrieve to cleanse and bear down your pendulum merely as you would any of your other charming tools. Assignments Post to Discussion Board: Purchase or do a pendulum if you do non already have one. Describe how your pendulum looks. What drew you to this pendulum? How does it experience? How did you cleanse and bear down your pendulum? What do you experience is the most advantageous belongings associated with the stones/metal/wood that makes the leaden point of your pendulum? If there is a rock at the terminal of the concatenation that you hold, what rock is this and make you experience it has belongingss that besides help the pendulum move? Lesson Four Geting to Know Your Pendulum In the past few lessons you have learned a spot about the pendulum, it uses throughout history and you have one in your ownership ââ¬â it is clip for you and your pendulum to acquire acquainted. This lesson and the undermentioned lesson will concentrate on the relationship edifice between you and your pendulum. You will go familiar with its motions and it will go familiar in reacting to your bids. The undermentioned lessons of exercisings will be important to fostering lessons and working with your pendulum in many different countries so acquire familiar with it and hold merriment! The first thing we have to make to acquire ready is to ready ourselves and our manner of thought. Most of us go through our day-to-day lives utilizing the left side of our encephalon ââ¬â the analytical side. In order to tap into any kind of divination work ( and this goes for any kind ââ¬â good beyond pendulums ) we need to cognize how to wake up and exert the right side of our encephalons ââ¬â the originative and intuitive side. This intuitive side of our encephalon is how we can link to our subconscious, to the spirit universe and to the Godhead. Meditation is normally a good index on exerting this country of the encephalon. Particularly if your speculation pattern is non the ââ¬Å" all must be stillness and quiet â⬠sort but is, alternatively, the kind of speculation chapeau allows for ideas, images and whatever else flow approximately. Using a pendulum can really assist with this by giving the analytical side of your encephalon something to make ( a physical ob ject on which to concentrate ) go forthing the intuitive side of your encephalon to get down to stretch and work its admirations through your pendulum. Using a pendulum is portion you, portion pendulum and can besides include other parts ( liquors, the Godhead, etc. ) which we will discourse much later. Right now it ââ¬Ës all you, your subconscious and your pendulum. Subsequently in this series of categories, we will larn how to utilize the pendulum for spirit contact and even reach with the Divine. Many believe that each object, populating or otherwise, gives off electro-magnetic quivers. These ââ¬Å" vibraphones â⬠are what you will be experiencing or turn uping or tapping into along with the spirit world/subconscious/divine when making any pendulum work. Talk to your pendulum. State it you are its new proprietor ; you will maintain it safe and in return it can help you. The first manner it will help you is to let the two of you to acquire to cognize each other. You can even pet it and love it and call it if you like. Some people do call their pendulum because they set up rather an confidant relationship with this little and fantastic tool. Working with Your Pendulum Get yourself in a relaxed province. If you are in a fidgety temper so the pendulum and any exercisings will non work suitably for you. You need to be in a unagitated province. Your energy degree can be high but your organic structure and head can non be all jumpy. Meditate if demand be for a few minutes. Rather than speculation, you can besides take a few proceedingss to merely take a breath ( this works truly good for me ) . Just acquire your ego comfy and think of nil but your breath. Take in a deep breath, easy make fulling your lungs and your tummy. Keep it for a minute and so easy exhale. Breathe in the composure by easy inhaling that composure and so expire the heebie-jeebiess or excitedness or whatever has got you in a non-relaxed temper. Continue this slow deep external respiration. I am normally relaxed after making three good long deep breaths. It may take more for you or less ââ¬â it is different for different people but as a general regulation, three is reasonably goo d. Keep the terminal of the concatenation between your pollex and index leting the concatenation to swing down with the leaden terminal hanging free and your cubitus resting on the border of a tabular array to maintain you stabilized. Keep the terminal steadfastly but slackly leting freedom of motion for the pendulum and maintaining yourself relaxed. If need be, utilize your other manus to calm the pendulum because you will desire it to be held still and non traveling at this clip. If there is a little shudder, that is all right but do maintain note that a little shudder in the pendulum is non an existent motion. Any motions your pendulum will do will be clear and concise motions whether they are singing or round motions. The little shudder is normally your ain motion impacting the pendulum somewhat. If this is your first clip in utilizing a pendulum or if it has been some clip since utilizing one, you will necessitate to pattern a few exercisings foremost to ââ¬Å" acquire in form â⬠. Practice these exercisings at least one time a twenty-four hours for the following hebdomad. You may go on to pattern these exercisings for longer, every bit long as you feel you are acquiring good responses from your pendulum and you are confident in the motions. Keep your pendulum as instructed antecedently and mentally inquire your pendulum to do clockwise circles. You can voice your bid every bit good if you feel comfy but this is non necessary. Since you are exerting the intuitive country of your encephalon, will the pendulum to make your command. It may non react right off. You may necessitate to wheedle it by gently utilizing your manus to swing it in that round gesture. Then halt it and once more will the pendulum to travel in a clockwise circle. Once the pendulum is responding decently, state it to halt and it should halt. You may necessitate to halt it yourself but so will it to swing once more and acquire it to listen to your mental stop bid. Once this is working satisfactorily, you can so get down to play with it holding it swing in smaller or larger circles and halting. After you ââ¬Ëve got the clockwise gesture down-pat, travel onto counter-clockwise circles in the same mode. Again, doing bigger and smaller circles and halting in a counter-clockwise gesture. When you have become successful at holding your pendulum create the round motions, so it is clip to seek a back and forward swing and so to swing from side to side. Use the same mental bids, halting between each new bid and get downing once more as you did when making circles. You can besides do it swing faster and wider or slower and smaller. This might look silly at first, but it is assisting to make a connexion between you and your pendulum. It is besides assisting to exert that right side of your encephalon and acquiring that intuitiveness fluxing good before traveling on. This will besides assist you at a ulterior clip when you will get down inquiring your pendulum inquiries. How so? Because you will cognize what a commanded swing feels like and when it is a gesture you did non command, but one that comes from another beginning ( your deep subconscious, liquors or the Godhead ) you will be able to experience the difference. It is that ââ¬Å" feeling â⬠that turns it into a ââ¬Å" knowing â⬠. Assignments Post to Discussion Board Practice the exercisings from the lesson with your pendulum at least one time a twenty-four hours every twenty-four hours for at least a hebdomad and maintain path of your consequences. How did you experience when first acquiring acquainted with your pendulum? Did you experience silly or were you comfy? Did you call it and if so, what name did you give it? How many times did you have to try the round exercising before your pendulum responded? Did you have any troubles? How long did it take your pendulum to react to the vacillation exercisings? Did you have any troubles? Which exercising do you experience was easier to finish ââ¬â circles or swings? Why do you believe that is? Lesson Five More Exercises In the old lesson we got familiar with our pendulums and were able to command their motions. In this lesson there will be more motion bids but these will be done somewhat otherwise and you do n't necessitate excessively many particular tools. What you are traveling to necessitate is yourself, your pendulum, a tabular array or other level surface to work on, three coins and three cups. Two of the coins must hold the same day of the month and they should all be of the same denomination ( pennies are normally truly good for these exercisings ) . Take the two coins that are the same denomination and day of the month. Put them about a manus width apart on your surface. Keep your pendulum as you were taught antecedently with the pendulum hanging over the infinite between the coins. Now, here is the cockamamie inquiry you askaÃâ à ¦ Ask your pendulum to state you which coins are the same. Yes, it is silly but it will do sense shortly. Your pendulum will either swing over the two coins or it will do a round gesture over the two coins. Once it has answered your inquiry right, state it to halt. Following, topographic point three coins on the surface about a custodies width apart in a triangular form. This clip two of the coins must be the same and the 3rd coin is different. It can be a different day of the month or denomination -that does n't count. It merely needs to be different. Again, inquire your pendulum to demo you the two coins that are the same. The pendulum will swing between the two coins that are the same. When it has completed this undertaking successfully, state it to halt. It truly is first-class pattern to acquire into this wont after each and every bid or inquiry. You can go on exchanging out coins and proving your pendulum in this manner until you are satisfied your pendulum is working in this mode decently. The following measure is to convey out the cups and maintain one coin. Put the coin on the surface and topographic point a cup inverted over the coin. Put the other cups inverted on the surface every bit good. Skid the cups around the surface blending up their order until you are diffident which cup has the coin underneath. Now, with your cups in a line and keeping the pendulum so it dangles in forepart of the line of cups but besides doing certain it is several inches off. You will necessitate room for its motions. Ask the pendulum to indicate to the cup with the coin underneath. This is a small trickier and it may take a small while before your pendulum begins acquiring the right reply. Do n't give up! It is a larning procedure non merely for your pendulum but besides for your ego and your right encephalon! Normally, I would state you that your pendulum is a serious divination tools and to non utilize it for playing game. Seriously, it is. You would non utilize your tarot cards to play fire hook, right? Or your set of runic letters for a different kind of balls and knuckleboness game, right? The same holds true for your pendulum. These ââ¬Å" games â⬠we are playing now are exercisings for you and your new tool. They are to be used to better aid you along in farther usage with your pendulum. This will go apparent when we get to that lesson. Your pendulum is a serious tool and should be treated as such. It is non to be used for parlour fast ones. Practice these exercisings every bit frequently as you can or necessitate to in order to set up a good working relationship with your pendulum. These are a little more hard and may necessitate a little more clip ââ¬â particularly the last exercising. Do non give up hope! You can make it! Assignments Post to the Discussion Board Truthfully, how silly did you experience inquiring your pendulum to demo you the two indistinguishable coins when there truly was merely two indistinguishable coins? Did you have any troubles with any of the exercisings? How many attempts did it take before you and your pendulum were able to right place the coin under the cup? What do you believe these exercisings will take to in making different divining techniques in the hereafter? Lesson Six Divining with Yes/No Questions In the past few lessons you have learned a spot about the pendulum, it uses throughout history, you have one in your ownership and the two of you have gotten a small acquainted. Now it is clip for you and your pendulum to acquire down to some merriment material and a small divination type of work larning the most common manner people use this tool for divination ââ¬â replying yes and no inquiries. Keep the terminal of the concatenation between your pollex and index leting the concatenation to swing down with the leaden terminal hanging free and your cubitus resting on the border of a tabular array to maintain you stabilized. If need be, utilize your other manus to calm the pendulum because you will desire it to be held still and non traveling at this clip. Ask it ââ¬Å" Show me Yes â⬠. It may non react instantly but it will react. If needed repetition the inquiry. You want it to set up a definite swing and non merely a little small frisson. It does non hold to swing so far or fast that it threatens to take out an oculus ââ¬â but it does necessitate to demo you a definite motion so you can set up a on the job form. Remember which manner it was singing ( right-to-left or back and frontward ) because this will be established as the reply ââ¬Å" Yes â⬠to a Yes/No Question you ask it. ââ¬Å" No â⬠should swing the opposite manner of ââ¬Å" yes â⬠. In other words, if ââ¬Å" yes â⬠was right-to-left so ââ¬Å" no â⬠will be normally be back and frontward. Be certain to state the pendulum ââ¬Å" Stop â⬠between each different motion and bid. It is good to acquire in this wont now because it is one that will be used ever when working with your pendulum. Sometimes, and this juncture seems pretty rare, a pendulum will travel doesil and widdershins for ââ¬Å" yes â⬠and ââ¬Å" no â⬠. This could even go on for ââ¬Å" possibly â⬠or ââ¬Å" do n't cognize â⬠. However, it will non go on for both or all. Each answer the pendulum will give you is alone to the pendulum but is besides ever the same. If ââ¬Å" yes â⬠is back and forward it will ever be back and frontward. Likewise, ââ¬Å" no â⬠will ever be left-to-right and so on nevertheless your pendulum has made this clear. You can even set up ââ¬Å" possibly â⬠and ââ¬Å" do n't cognize â⬠in the same manner. Be certain between each clip you tell your pendulum ââ¬Å" Stop â⬠. We need to set up these replies of ââ¬Å" possibly â⬠and ââ¬Å" do n't cognize â⬠every bit good because sometimes the reply is non unequivocal. Many times, people will make a board to transport with their pendulum to reply merely such inquiries. The board can be every bit simple or every bit fancy as you want it. It can be a board with the waies painted or wood-burned into the surface ; a piece of cloth with the waies drawn, stitched or painted on ; or even a piece of paper. Here is an illustration of what your board may look like: Establishing this good working relationship with your pendulum will profit you as a novitiate pendulum diviner and will still be a endowment you will go on to utilize as a maestro diviner. You may even go so familiar with the motions of your pendulum that you will no longer necessitate your Yes/No board. Whether or non this is true, the manner your pendulum moves in reply to the inquiries will ever be the same. This holds true whether you are tapping into your ain subconscious ideas and feelings ( as we are with this lesson ) or whether you are working with the spirit universe and the Godhead ( in subsequently categories ) . Be certain when you are inquiring your pendulum yes/No inquiries that you are non concentrating on a specific reply because you will it to be so. If you do this, so your pendulum will either respond to the mental bid you are giving it or it will be confused and non respond at all. Alternatively, inquire the inquiry with an attitude of ââ¬Å" I wonder what the result will be? â⬠Besides, maintain in head the reaction of the reply the pendulum gives you. If it is a full and good swing so you answer is rather definite. If it is a more halfhearted swing, so the reply could be ââ¬Å" yes â⬠( or whichever manner the pendulum was singing ) but a ââ¬Å" yes â⬠that could be more unequivocal with other factors in topographic point. Another thing, if your pendulum does non travel it could be due to a refusal to reply the inquiry you asked. paraphrase it and see if you can acquire an reply so. Last, stick to your ain ethical motives and codification of moralss. If it is again st your beliefs to be glancing in on others, so make non make it with your pendulum either. Stick to your ain comfort zone and boundaries in ethical motives and moralss merely as you would in any other divination or magickal state of affairs. Assignments Post in the Discussion Board: Print out and/or create a pendulum board ( click nexus below for image with words to cut out if inclined to make so & A ; topographic point in countries ) so you can hold a paper one OR you can acquire more originative and do your ain out of another stuff. Describe how you made your pendulum Yes/No board and the swing of your pendulum swings for each way. PENDULUM BOARD TO PRINT Post below: Ask your pendulum a series of inquiries ( 3-5 inquiries ) . Record the inquiries and replies here. Do you experience your pendulum gave you accurate replies to your inquiries? Lesson Seven Personal Energy Work Now that you have a pendulum and you ââ¬Ëve established a good yes/no/maybe/do n't cognize relationship, allow ââ¬Ës travel on to research other ways you can work with your pendulum. These following few exercisings in this lesson will assist steer you into making some energy work with your pendulum. As a magickal practician of any kind, you should already cognize that there is energy all around you and within you. This energy is what you use when directing out any kind of enchantment work. There is besides energy within you and environing your organic structure. This is called your energy field. If you have of all time had an aura reading done or an aura image taken, this is the energy the camera or reader is sing ââ¬â the energy that surrounds your organic structure. When you raise energy either through enchantment work, ritual work or even heightened emotions this energy field is besides raised and spreads out farther from your organic structure. In this first exercising, you are traveling to utilize your pendulum to observe the energy field around you. State your pendulum, ââ¬Å" Show me my energy field. â⬠Remember to utilize a steady manus, rest your cubitus on a tabular array border if need be and let your pendulum freedom of motion. It will get down to swing about in either a doesil ( clockwise ) or widdershins ( counter-clockwise ) gesture. Whichever manner it swings, does n't intend anything. It is the act of the motion itself that you ââ¬Ëre concentrating on. If your energy field is high, the round gesture of the pendulum will be fast and broad. If your energy field is low, so the round gesture of the pendulum will be little and slower. In this following exercising, we are traveling to concentrate on raising and take downing your energy field through the usage of your pendulum. When your energy field is high and you are holding problem foundation, this simple act can really assist you to anchor. As the pendulum does its round gesture of fast and big, state it to decelerate down. State it to assist convey in your energy field. Sometimes, this will take a few proceedingss and sometimes it is a affair of minutes but finally the pendulum will decelerate down and the round gesture will acquire smaller. Continue with this exercising until you feel the pendulum has helped you to acquire your energy degree to a more manageable province and so state the pendulum ââ¬Å" Stop â⬠. Similarly, you can use your pendulum to assist raise energy if it is low. This is done in precisely the opposite manner of take downing the energy field. You do this by stating your pendulum you want your energy raised. Depending on how low your energy degree was to get down with will depend on how easy your energy degree is raised. Another blocker in either instance will be either your willingness to let the energy field to be raised or lowered. You truly necessitate to be in a province of head of credence of this happening so that you do non acquire discouraged. The elevation of an energy field can sometimes be a small more hard than take downing it. Once your energy field is raised, state the pendulum ââ¬Å" Stop. â⬠Repeat the procedure of take downing your energy field by utilizing your pendulum until you are at a manageable energy province once more and once more state the pendulum to ââ¬Å" Stop. â⬠This will assist you in larning another manner to maintain your en ergies in balance. Continue with this pattern until you are comfy in acknowledging your energy field every bit good as raising and take downing your energy field. Then finish the assignments below. Assignments ââ¬â Post to Discussion Board When you foremost used your pendulum to observe your energy field, what was the consequence? Was your energy high or low? Make it observe it right or make you experience the pendulum did non accurately observe your personal energy field? Raise your energy field by utilizing your pendulum. How long did it take to carry through this? How does it do you experience? Now lower your energy field to a manageable or comfy degree. How long did it take to carry through this? How do you experience now? Do you experience comfy utilizing your pendulum in this pattern for your ain energy field? Lesson Eight More Energy Work The old lesson we learned how to make balance in the energy field for ego by raising and lowering/speeding up and decelerating down the round gesture of the pendulum. This was accomplished through many different channels. It was through your bid of the pendulum and its motions. It was besides through utilizing your right encephalon and tapping into your subconscious to command your energy field. I told you that those earlier gestures lessons were traveling to stop up paying off ââ¬â and we have hardly even scratched the surface! These following energy field exercisings will necessitate the cooperation of another individual. For this following 1 we will be turn uping border of another ââ¬Ës energy field/aura. First, you ( the diviner ) will stand following to another individual. Right following to them. Keep out your pendulum and inquire it to demo you their energy field. Your pendulum should get down to swing broad and fast or travel in a big round gesture. As you slowly travel off from your spouse, the pendulum ââ¬Ës swing should decelerate until it becomes smaller and Michigans when you are at the border or merely outside the boundary of their energy field. If you take a measure near them once more, the pendulum should so pick up its impulse once more. Try this either with different people or with different degrees of energy. Emotions can play a big portion in the size of a individual ââ¬Ës energy field. Angry emotions tend to be held tighter and closer to a individual as do feelings of apprehensiveness. Happiness tends to make big nergy Fieldss around a individual. Have some merriment and laugh, so seek this exercising once more. If your spouse is a practician of the trade, they can seek some things as you approach or travel off with your pendulum. They can seek to screen themselves and see how that affects your pendulum. They can seek to raise energy in other ways ( similar to raising energy during ritual or for spell work ) and see how that affects your pendulum and how it reacts to their energy field. In this following exercising, you ( the diviner ) will hold your dorsum to your spouse. Keep your pendulum out in forepart of you. Now have your friend move easy and softly towards you but you truly necessitate to be incognizant of their propinquity to you. If need be, someway hold your ears plugged so you can non hear their attack. At the beginning of this exercising, state your pendulum it is to travel when your spouse stairss into your energy field. When your spouse comes to the border and/or crosses the boundary line line of your energy field, your pendulum should swing to alarm you of their attack. This exercising can be a spot more hard and sometimes does non work ab initio. A batch depends on the working relationship you have established with your pendulum. Stick with it and shortly you can go an unstoppable divinatory brace! Decision This full category is a basic lesson in how to run your pendulum, use it for some simple energy work and some really basic divination techniques you can make by inquiring yes/no type inquiries. Those types of inquiries can truly pay off in the long tally. You merely necessitate to inquire several of them and through the different replies you can find a batch. You can even believe of it as a game of ââ¬Å" 20 Questions â⬠where you need to inquire a batch of inquiries in order to come to a decision. Working with your pendulum in this mode can be rather good in many different ways ââ¬â far excessively many to even get down to advert here. Safety, Accidents, and Investigations Be Prepared for the Unexpected by Robert Battles
Safety, Accidents, and Investigations Be Prepared for the Unexpected by Robert Battles Summary of the article The article written by Robert Battles (2011) is aimed at showing how employers can approach safety problems or accidents and mitigate their impact on the functioning of the organization. In particular, the author lays stress on the development of accident prevention plan. Employees should focus on several important activities. In particular, one can speak about hazard analysis which includes identification and assessment of those factors that can increase the risk of accidents (Battles, 2011, p. 5).Advertising We will write a custom article sample on ââ¬Å"Safety, Accidents, and Investigations: Be Prepared for the Unexpectedâ⬠by Robert Battles specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More For instance, one can mention the use of chemicals or operation of complex machinery (Battles, 2011, p. 5). Additionally, Robert Battles argues that employers should concentrate on training since it is crucial for the effective imple mentation of accident prevention plans (2011, p. 6). This scholar also notes that companies should regularly review and update these plans. They may mention specific safety accidents, identify their causes, and show how they can be prevented in the future. Moreover, the author places emphasis on the ability of employers to mitigate the impact of safety accidents. In particular, he speaks about the need to provide effective medical assistance to an injured worker. Additionally, they should immediately identify and eliminate the cause of a specific accident. Finally, Robert Battles discusses the way in which safety accidents can be investigated. Business administrators should remember that OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) will pay close attention to the documentation and interviews with employees (Battles, 2011). These are some of the details that should be considered. Responses to the questions Overall, the authorââ¬â¢s main point is that by focusing on safety issues, entrepreneurs can reduce their operational costs. For example, a well-developed safety program can help a company reduce health care costs and avoid such pitfalls as fines or lost productivity (Battles, 2011, p. 3). In this context, one can speak mostly about the hidden costs of negligence. In many cases, they can undermine the financial performance of a business. This is one of the issues that should be taken into account. It should be mentioned that the article is primarily intended for business owners and managers who must ensure effective functioning of businesses and eliminate potential threats to the life or health of employees. Moreover, these people should know how to interact with governmental agencies that can inspect their organizations. This is why they can be viewed as the main reading audience. While analyzing potential hazards, managers can concentrate on several issues that are related to the cost of incidents. For instance, they should identify those factors that can increase the risk of injuries. Such injuries can eventually result in significant expenses for a company.Advertising Looking for article on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Furthermore, accident prevention is closely related to disruptions. Very often, a single fire can stop the work of a manufacturing company for several days. This delay can lead to considerable losses. Moreover, business administrators should remember about the possibility of damaging expensive equipment. Provided that they can eliminate potential threats, their costs can be significantly reduced. This is why this aspect of risk management should not be overlooked. While preparing for investigations, entrepreneurs should make sure that their documentation is properly arranged. As it has been said before, an accident prevention plan must contain relevant information about safety measures taken by the company. Moreover, the management may be asked to demonstrate the equipment which is used to minimize the risk of injuries. Additionally, employers should actively cooperate with the representatives of governmental organizations such as OSHA. Provided that managers do not comply with the demands of inspectors, these officials may come to the conclusion that something is concealed from them. This is one of the pitfalls that should be avoided. It should be mentioned that safety investigation can lead to different outcomes. For example, fines can be imposed on employers. Moreover, they may be asked to appear in the court. In some cases, such investigations can even lead to imprisonment (Battles, 2011, p. 8). Thus, companies may often need the assistance of legal professionals who can effectively protect their interests. In many cases, entrepreneurs may need to dispute the decision of governmental inspectors. These are some of the major outcomes that business owners should be ready for. This article can b e improved by including specific case examples which can illustrate safety prevention strategies used by various businesses representing various industries. These examples can be of great benefit to readers who want to know how the ideas expressed by the author can be related to their company. This is one of the recommendations that can be made. Furthermore, Robert Battles might have mentioned some of the regulations that are applicable to safety accidents. Additionally, scholars pay close attention to the way in which training programs can be implemented (Goetsch, 2011, p. 217). The author discusses the importance of training, but he does not give any examples which can show that companies should approach this task. Yet, despite these limitations, this article can be used a starting point by business administrators.Advertising We will write a custom article sample on ââ¬Å"Safety, Accidents, and Investigations: Be Prepared for the Unexpectedâ⬠by Robert Battles specif ically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Reference List Battles, R. Jackson Revised Essay
Jackson Revised Essay Jackson Revised Essay Marisa Shoulla Andrew Jackson the seventh president of the United States was seen as the Common Manââ¬â¢s President to some and to others he was seen as King Andrew I. Many of Jacksonââ¬â¢s actions lead to him receiving both nicknames. Some of Jacksonââ¬â¢s actions that caused him to receive this nickname, include the use of spoils system which gave his friends and family government jobs. Also the situation with South Carolina and the Indian Removal Act where Jackson misused his powers and acted out irrationally. Then the incident with the National Bank, which Jacksonââ¬â¢s actions during his presidency later caused the national bank to become bankrupt. Jackson was thought to be ill tempered while others believed he was merely being confident. Based on Jacksonââ¬â¢s presidential actions he rightfully earned the nickname of King Andrew I, and that King Andrew I was the true side of Jackson. However the argument on how Jackson was seen as the Common Manââ¬â¢s president can be argued because he removed Native Americans off land that was suitable for our farming, which made the U.S more money. Some thought of Jackson as the Common Manââ¬â¢s President and there are many instances where his actions, can be seen as Jackson trying to make the best decisions for the common man. For example the incident with the national bank, Jackson refused the charter justifying it by saying he was protecting the people. It can be argued that Jacksonââ¬â¢s intentions were always trying to do what was best for the people, he just did it in an unconditional way. Also when Jackson relocated the Native Americans, he opened more land up that Americans could now use to farm and make more money for the industry. Jackson himself was not like other presidents, he was not opulent, as well schooled and he was not from the east like the previous six presidents before him. Jackson had his own way of achieving what he wanted done, which was threatening and making irrational moves. His actions can be argued for being the Common Manââ¬â¢s President as well as King Andrew I. Andrew Jackson was able to become president because of the new requirements on voting. At that time fewer states had property qualifications to vote. This lead to the a major increase of voters and since Jackson was self brought up he appealed to the common man. Since Jackson was known as the Common Manââ¬â¢s President many of the new first time voters who were just common men voted for Jackson. Jackson was smart and used this to his advantage, once in office Jackson used the spoils system and to give jobs to his friends and family, without them having any qualifications. Jacksonââ¬â¢s mentality behind this was if he treated his friends and family well, by giving them high ranked jobs that paid well, they would agree with the decisions he made, because they didnââ¬â¢t know any better. When Jackson had these people supporting him, he had the power to do anything he wanted, as a king would. Actions such as the situation with South Carolina, the Indian Removal Act and the incident with the National Bank happened because Jackson had his supporters in office backing up every decision he made. Before Andrew Jackson entered office, congress passed the Tariff of 1828, which put a heavy tax on imported goods, the tariff of 1828ââ¬â¢s goal was to try and boost American manufacturing. The north benefitted from the tariff while the south thought of it as the Tariff of Abomination. After another tariff was passed, South Carolina threatened to secede from the union. When Jackson heard the news he issued a proclamation against South Carolina, threatening to send 50,000 troops to invade, this was called the Force Bill. No president should threaten one of its own states. Reaching the point where he sent our own military into South Carolina, to get revenge on them.. This reaction imitates the response a King would have, not a president. This was one of the many instances that the nickname King
